Meals on Wheels West (MOWW), a nonprofit based in Santa Monica, California, was looking for something more than data entry from its bookkeeping services provider. As a nonprofit, it needed someone who understood the nuances of bookkeeping for nonprofits, could implement systems to streamline the audit process, and prepare detailed financial information for their Board of directors.

MOWW delivers more than 80,000 healthy meals and services per year to the coastal communities near Los Angeles. Supporting Strategies | Los Angeles assigned their Nonprofit Practice Leader, with 30 years of nonprofit expertise, to evaluate MOWW’s needs.

Establishing more efficient procedures
Supporting Strategies set into place systems and procedures that make bookkeeping more efficient, from improving AP/AR processes to managing monthly closings and reports—both saving time for MOWW staff on a regular basis, and saving time each year during tax preparation. In short order, MOWW's filings were clean, well-organized—and on time, much to the delight of Chief Administrative Officer, Kevin McNulty. "I shared my amazement with our auditor," he says.

Enhancing communication with Board members
An important part of the success of a nonprofit is having clear and easy-to-understand financial reports—giving the Board of directors the information they need to better advise the nonprofit. Supporting Strategies delivered detailed financials to MOWW, enabling McNulty to provide more financial information to the Board as well as answer their questions. “My Board is quite pleased with the monthly financial reporting,” says McNulty.

With nonprofit expertise, a systematic approach to bookkeeping processes, and enhanced financial reporting, Supporting Strategies helped MOWW to improve their operations and enable them to focus on the important work at the heart of their mission.
